The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is a research organization funded by the insurance industry. Its Wildfire Prepared Home designation is one of the few nationally recognized, science-backed standards for home-level wildfire resilience.
Why It Matters
Insurance carriers pay attention to IBHS standards because IBHS is funded by - and serves - the insurance industry. A home that meets Wildfire Prepared Home criteria is a home that demonstrably reduces claims risk. Several admitted carriers have begun using IBHS compliance as a factor in coverage and pricing decisions.
The Two Designation Levels
Wildfire Prepared Home
The base designation requires a comprehensive assessment of home hardening measures and defensible space. Key requirements include:
Wildfire Prepared Home Plus
The enhanced designation adds stricter requirements around windows, siding, decking, and overall combustibility. It's designed to maximize structural survivability under direct ember and flame exposure.
How Our Reports Address IBHS Compliance
Every report we produce includes an assessment of your property's current compliance with IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home criteria. For properties that don't yet qualify, we provide a specific, prioritized action plan showing exactly what upgrades are needed and in what order.
For homeowners trying to qualify for - or maintain - insurance coverage, IBHS alignment documentation is one of the most useful things you can present to a carrier.
Getting Started
If you want to understand where your property stands relative to IBHS standards, a Core Report or In-Person Assessment is the right starting point. We'll tell you exactly where you are, what it would take to qualify, and what the insurance implications are likely to be.
